Why Tinycam

A short letter · September 2026

I built Tinycam because my phone kept telling me it was full, and I kept believing it.

The warning always came at the worst moment: the light on the kitchen table one morning, a street I would never walk down again. I would see "Storage Almost Full" and put the phone away. The shot I skipped was never the boring one.

What made it click was my own family. The pictures of us we go back to most are not in our camera rolls. They are in my wife's Snapchat memories, a fraction of the size, and it does not matter at all. What we feel is the day, not the pixels. The best record of our family turned out to be the smallest one, because it held only moments.

That taught me what a photo is actually for. You look at it on a phone, for a few seconds, and you feel something. At that size a photo can be thirty to forty times smaller with nothing you can see missing, and a clip shrinks the same way. The company that made your phone would rather sell you a two terabyte one, and cloud storage on top, than make either smaller. So Tinycam makes one trade: give up the pixels no one looks at, keep the moments no one wants to lose. Once a shot costs almost nothing you stop rationing, and a year later the unremarkable Tuesday is the one that gets you.

There is no account, no feed, and no server of mine. Your photos live on your phone and only there. That is a limit as much as a promise, since Tinycam is not a backup. But they are yours, entirely.

Tinycam is small and it will stay small. If it gets you one shot you would otherwise have skipped, it has done what I built it for.
